Memories of The Theatre Cafe

As the Theatre Café announce their new digital live evening of entertainment (Sunday 7th February) I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to reflect on some of my memories of this precious venue.

Sunday Night Live at the Theatre Cafe, 7th February at 6pm.

I was blessed to be living in London during the café’s initial opening in Shaftesbury Avenue. Studying at drama school as a stage manager certainly proved challenging and busy, with the Theatre Café always a relished opportunity to escape our mad, mad world.

Mouth-watering cakes, show-tunes and a plethora of memorabilia everywhere you turn: it truly is a stunning place to meet friends, reminisce about theatre trips and take a breather from the rush of our capital.

A special memory comes in the form of the WhatsOnStage 2016 quiz, hosted by the café with Jersey Boys star Michael Watson as quizmaster. Delighted to remember we won ‘best team name’ as “The Quizard of Oz”!

The evening was a testament to the friendly atmosphere of the café which regularly brings theatre professionals and fans together in a relaxed, stagey environment.

My collection of Theatre Cafe cups!

Even the cups – and creatively named beverages – ooze a theatrical flair. Every detail, from lush, framed posters to the heavily autographed bathroom door is a showcase of the wonderful, bustling West End this treat of a venue inhabits.

As we continue to navigate our ‘new normal’, the café’s joyous concerts move online, with a free evening of entertainment coming up in February. It’s set to be a fantastic opportunity; a joyous celebration sure to remind us of what we can look forward to when the world and café re-opens.
